Cooler Tube Train Unveiled By Mayor

Boris Johnson this morning unveiled a mock-up of the new “S” stock trains being constructed for the Metropolitan, Circle, District and Hammersmith & City lines. Boasting more spacious interiors and easier movement between carriages, the main bragging point is that the trains will feature air conditioning, a first for the Underground. Sweltering Victoria line commuters, don’t get your hopes up – these shallow, cut-and-cover lines make a/c much easier, though TfL claims to be working on a scheme for deep-level tunnels. Read More

What I really like about these is the open space between carriages.
It means that when pick-pockets, theives, ne’er-do-wells and shouty kids leg it from one end of the train to the other, they get a bit more speed up – which means they fly further when you accidentally trip them up, and TfL staff/transport police get more exercise as they try to chase them from their place on the platform.

I particularly like the ‘arty’ close-up photography in the article of the patterns on the seat cover and the emergency alarm.

...is that especially because they’re two of the things that are, essentially, exactly the same as before?

Fucksake.
Can they stop ponsing around with “bigger”, “shinier”, “cooler”, “nicer” etc. and get on with “longer” so as to fit in more people without crushing them, and “faster” so we spend less time on them and get to work quicker?
“Cheaper” would be nice too.

Bad journey to work this morning was it?

I love the way Boris is all over these like a rash? Are they down to him personally?
Or are they, surely not, simply new trains that would have been ordered whoever was mayor?

I would stand with Purpaboo if I didn’t cycle.
But in answer to Mr Mike Carter In London…
...In management speak, I think these may commonly be referred to as:
“Low hanging fruit” [snigger] or “Quick wins”
To the rest of us they may commonly be referred to as:
“Popularist in the absence of substance”

I suggest that we make it part of Purpaboo’s birthday celebrations tomorrow to go see the new train (after the Saturday morning beerfest) wouldn’t that be jolly fun? or maybe not, just more beer and old style tubes to get there and back
