While debate begins over what will be done with recently saved Smithfield market, a gaggle of protesters have taken the bull by the horns and temporarily requisitioned it into a makeshift protest podium. Read More

I was going to say “Woo to the yay!”, thinking it was protesters protesting the success of their earlier protests, because we’re soon to move to offices down there and I could have joined in at lunchtimes and such, but having read the article, I sadly can’t.

However, I can say “Woo to the yay!” for the sheer hell of it, and will do so with careless abandon, knowing full well that this will probably annoy the hell out of some vegan or other, but not as much as being a meatafarian, it has to be said.

I’ll try to balance things out now by saying “Three cheers for standing up for your beliefs but please do be careful on top of tall buildings”.

Around 95% of greenhouse gases might possibly caused by the existance of humans. Fight climate change – die.

I have to admit that as respectful as I try to be to other people’s beliefs, two of my favourite t-shirts in the world are: here (which got me into lots of trouble with somebody quite big in the UK Vegan Association [still skinny though] – although that was due to a slightly unfortunate misunderstanding), and here (which anybody interested is more than welcome to buy me for my birthday).

Some vegans have finally got round to sending us a note about this post. They’re terribly polite. Look:

It’s great that you have given coverage to the vegan protest at Smithfield meat market but, perhaps, instead of trivialising the message as “self-righteous effluent”, you could track down the protesters and interview them about the very important and relevant points they were making.

The “18 per cent of greenhouse gases are produced by the meat and dairy industries” is from a United Nations report and you can take it as a fact. If you could write a serious article on how becoming a vegan can significantly reduce one’s eco footprint, you could help make a fantastic difference for the environment.

Yeah. I did try to explain that although it stated that meat was very tasty, and that eating it involved murder, it didn’t actually say anything about whether I condoned the latter, or indeed ate meat (to be fair though, I had had a couple, and may not have been at my most eloquent).

However, as per the very polite response from the vegans above, they did seem to find it terminally impossible to see, or even acknowledge a lighter side and engage with the source of their displeasure.

Maybe there’s something about feeling like you’re part of a misunderstood minority that makes people aggressively militant. You can’t help but thinking that this doesn’t actually help evangelise the masses, but it would reinforce a self-fulfilling sense of us and them…

...sorry, this is the first year psychology seminar, right?
